<image:title>Stories - Wolves & The Transformation of an Ecosystem</image:title>
<image:caption>After nearly 70 years of absence, 31 grey wolves were introduced to Yellowstone and this is where our trophic cascade begins. A trophic cascade is an ecological phenomenon triggered by the addition or removal of top predators impact the density and/or behaviour of their prey and thereby enhance survival of the next lower trophic level. The reintroduced wolves began killing the deer and elk, which started changing the behaviour of the deer as they began to avoid valleys and gorges. The valleys and gorges which had previously been heavily consumed by deer became forests of aspens, cottonwoods and willow trees.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Materializing the Invisible: Moving Beyond the Fantasy World - If you said “Invisibility”, then you’re in luck. Once a sci-fi/fantasy dream, the power of invisibility has become a reality. Hyperstealth Biotechnology from Canada has been developing a ‘Broadband Invisibility Cloak’ that uses their patented “Quantum Stealth” material to make wearers seem invisible. The technology works by optic technology that bends surrounding light to make a target disappear. This kind of technology, or magic was for a long time thought to be impossible by most scientists (and most other muggles!). The application of the technology will be for military use, to hide tanks and personnel.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - The Rights of Nature: The Fight for Legal Personhood</image:title>
<image:caption>In my class, the highlighted example was the story of the Whanganui River in Aotearoa (New Zealand) where in 2017 the government enacted legislation to recognize the River as an individual, indivisible entity, granting it legal rights and responsibilities, the same as you or I would have. The Māori people from there, the Whanganui Iwi, are deeply connected with the River though ancestral ties existed long before the colonization of Aotearoa. The decision was significant not only for granting legal rights to a natural entity, but it models a practice to evolve the common law to better respect and reflect Indigenous legal principles for environmental protection.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Atlas and Shared Responsibility</image:title>
<image:caption>The way we tell stories about ourselves and to ourselves changes the way we think and changes what we believe is impossible and known to be possible. Recall the story of Atlas, a Greek Titan, and the original Global Positioning System who led sailors safely home by telling them which stars to follow, all while holding up the sky. Atlas is caught in between two versions of the same story. In the first, he is a traitor who leads a rebellion against Olympus and is then sentenced to hold the heavens on his shoulders. In the second, he is chosen to be the guardian of the pillars that hold up the Earth and Sky. I prefer the second story because it means that the burden of the world is not a punishment, but rather a responsibility.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fec866edf316630764d556d/1667569623409-0UOPYELUGTGBS2DBYRO9/unsplash-image-AnVB92rOl60.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Stories - Atlas and Shared Responsibility</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1995, against all odds, the Springboks of the South African Rainbow Nation claimed victory over the favourites to win, the New Zealand All Blacks. Cleats planted in the earth, the Springboks, as an initiative lead by Nelson Mandela, held up the sky to bring a nation together by winning and bearing the rainbow flag and forging a new identity. The punishing burden of victory transformed into a shared goal and responsibility to be more than what they were. The idea of shared responsibility reverberated through the players and through the stands as the 1995 Rugby World Cup represented more than just a game. They became Atlas.</image:caption>
